Beech and Hornbeam hedges, dry stone walls and old mellow brick masonry create a maze of jewellike compartments which focus on a Maple Court. The court contains two Japanese Weeping Maples that are perhaps the finest in the country.
Radiating from the Maple Court are two gardens, both with twin herbaceous borders, and planted with hundreds of exquisite perennials - one in cool colours, the other warm.
Below the Maple Court lies the Green Theatre, reminiscent of old Italian gardens. The stage is overshadowed by a tapestry wall of green and copper beech perfectly placed to aid acoustics. In summer, this area is used for twilight musical recitals.
The Old Rose Walk is to one side of this last area, and leads to the Peony Pavilion. These glorious plants produce their ravishing flowers in late spring and it is in this romantic spot that the marquee is situated. Below, the path leads between huge Ghent Azaleas under-planted with Lilliums.
The formal garden areas are surrounded by woodlands of Beech, Maple, Rhododendron and Magnolia. These magnificent trees, imported from Japan and Europe, date to earliest days of the original Woolrich Nursery and are now of historic importance. Scattered amongst the woodland are extraordinary fields of naturalized Daffodils, Grape Hyacinths, Bluebells and Nerines.
